Replacing Windows
I’m considering replacing the windows in my apartment. Does anyone know if window replacement requires a permit from the City? And, for people who live in coops, is this kind of project normally subject to the Board’s alteration agreement process?

coops will seldom allow you to replace your own windows as it will disrupt the way he building looks unless you replace with same. And why would you want to do that?
Ty6 for once you’re right. If the OP’s windows are bad, probably the whole buildings’ are bad as well. The board should make an assessment and do the whole building, which would be cheaper anyway on a unit basis than doing them one at a time.
Wow… I guess I’m naive, but window replacement wouldn’t always be in the category of *major capital improvements and repair*?? Ya know, the types of things you pay your monthly fees to cover? Seems crazy to me.
what Ed said but your co-op might require an authorized window replacer who has worker’s comp and liability insurance. Check with your co-op board on the requirements. Also, some co-ops actually replace the windows themselves so check with the board as well as that may be the case and you’ll save some money.
Replacing the windows in-kind does not require a permit though if the building is a landmark or a landmark district you’ll need to file with the Lanmarks Preservation Commission. Ed Kopel Architects, PC
