The top floor tenants in our brownstone are complaining about mosquitos. We have never had this complaint before and don’t see any mosquitos on the other floors, where we live. No obvious sources especially (including gutters, especially seeing as their windows are closed). I am perplexed as to where they are coming from this time of year and how to eradicate them. Perhaps eggs were laid somewhere in the walls when it was warmer outside? Much thanks in advance for your advice.

  1. Yeah, I swatted one in my living room last night. It’s been too warm and wet this fall.

We need a few nights where the temp drops below freezing for a while to get rid of them.

  2. OMG we totally have mosquitoes in our bedroom i thought i was going crazy but I guess we’re not the only ones! (these are mosquitoes — bedbugs don’t whine in your ear.)

BTW we’ve noticed a large increase in mosquito population since we moved to Brooklyn 15 years ago. I think city used to spray for West Nile, but since they stopped the evil demon spawn have returned. I grew up in New England where the mosquitos are fat and slow and easy to kill. Brooklyn mosquitos are much more devious.

  3. where there’s a will there’s a way, and where there’s a way there’s a mosquito.
as we all know, they breed in standing water.
check your whole house…there could be water collected on the roof…they could get access via a dryer vent or a vented skylight, for starters. also external drains are popular..it will soon be too cold for them outside, so the problem might clear…but is there a drip pail in basement, say in the furnace room? if so, you could have a breeding colony year round (oh joy!)

  4. Thanks for the comments. They are definitely mosquitoes, as I saw one loping around in the air when I was up there. (I had feared the dreaded BB’s as well.) Perhaps we’re experiencing them in that apartment because it’s the top floor, and therefore warmer.

  5. We have mosquitos in our brownstone every November. In fact, my husband calls them “The mosquitos of November.”
Haven’t been able to figure out where they come from, but they are definitely mosquitos.
