It’ll be the death of me…

I am halfway through stripping an old marble firplace and cast-iron fire of the, who knows how many layers of paint.

Does anybody know how parts superglue to parts toxic lead paint they mixed back in the day?

Yours,

consumed by fumes.

  1. Peel Away works miracle. Much better than Rock Miracle for when you get down to those hard to lift paint layers. The trick to Peel Away are as follows:

Layer it on using a small spackle knife.
Use a brush to get it into the small detail layers.
Coat as much of the fire place as you can on the first go round, then, (this is KEY)
put the paper all over the Peelaway and be sure to get the paper to lay evenly over the work with slight overlaps. Then tape down all of the seams of the paper. DO NOT MISS ANY AREAS WITH TAPE. Why? Well I think that if air gets on the peel away it stops if from doing its jobs of stripping the paint and it will begin to harden.

2nd most important part. Leave it on 24 hours and 24 hours ONLY! If you leave it on longer then you will damage the Marble by having it leave a yellowish tinge.

3rd most important part – When you are cleaning it all off, be prepared to get it all off in one day so have your tools ready. The acid wash, clean spackle knife, a set of stiff brushes of different widths, a good contractors sponge and plenty of shop rags. Once you get it all off you will be surprised at how well it works.

A NOTE OF CAUTION: Peel Away is very strong and may eat at the mortar the connects all of the elements of the marble together. You may need to have a professional come in and polish the marble and then check all of the seams but it was cheaper to do that than to pay someone to come in and strip. I saved about $1,500 doing it myself.

    Good luck

  2. unfortunately for marble, you have to use rock miracle. i tried the biodegradable paint strippers and it didn’t work. You also need to use the 3M scrubber sponges, after using a plastic scraper to get it all off. Make sure you have the windows open!!

  3. Yeah, we’ve been doing this.

You need to let the stripper do the work–if you are exerting effort you are not waiting long enough. Seriously. Put the stripper on and go do something else for a few hours.

To keep the stripper sitting on the vertical surface you can apply newspaper or paper towels after you apply the stripper.
