BSM and Amzi, good work, I know how hard you’ve been working. As I told Amzi, if you need my help, call me. This is 30 years overdue.
B3, check the LPC’s website for rules and regs. Whatever is there when building is calendared is grandfathered in. Basically major changes to facade require LPC permit/permission, including changing windows and doors. Routine maintainance, like painting the same color as before, and or repairs that do not change the appearance of the building do not need LPC attention. If in doubt, check with LPC. They can issue a certificate of no effect for most things. Biggies, like adding another story, an addition, or changing the facade require community board approval, LPC approval and DOB permits, as well as an architect. This is a much more involved and complicated process not for those in a hurry or the faint of heart. http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/html/working_with/perform_work.shtml
Dave I want to get with you, your area is already calendered the only thing we need is for community support… The hard part is done with your area. I know a few blocks around you are very much in favor of this. We do need to get together soon along with BedstuyMaven.
Is there any rule as to alterations to a building inside of the historic district? Permits?
BedStuyMaven and others: Congrats on this progress and preservation of such a beautiful neighborhood. Love the fact that your LPC link opens directly to their FAQ page. A few suggestions: on your preservation links page, you might want to add another LPC link and make it clear that LPC and HDC are distinctly different organizations. Another link you might want to add is this one, which is a wonderful resource: http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/tps/briefs/presbhom.htm
Please sign the on-line petition.
