My husband, a not-so-handy architect, thinks we need to have our not-so-competent handyman install our new kitchen faucet. Isn’t it pretty simple? Can’t anybody (like me) do it?

  1. I don’t touch electricity and I don’t touch plumbing fixtures. This is an especially wise policy in a co-op. In your own house, I suppose you have more leeway, but it is hard to get the guerney down those twisty brownstone stairs after you electrocute yourself or hit you head really hard on the underside of the counter.

  2. Minard! I’m disappointed. You can’t get practice unless you try. And appendectomies have to be done right the first time. A faucet? Not so much. And think of the sense of accomplishment!

Hire a plumber if you need to change the water lines (and you don’t like blow torches), but if you’re just installing a new faucet? You should be able to do that yourself… or at least try.

Same goes with changing a light switch or installing a ceiling fan. Easy tasks any homeowner should be able to do (or, again, at least try!) This is ‘Merica for chrissake!

  3. I wouldn’t do it so I don’t recommend you do it. Installing a new faucet is a snap for someone with practice and tools. Same goes for an appendectomy.

  4. I think you should try it as well. Get the wrench and plumber’s putty for the drain and you’re set. You’ll need a Phillips head screw driver also and possibly an Allen wrench though usually one is included with the new faucet.

As someone who has done a lot of building I think you should shame your architect hubby into seeiong what life’s like out in the field. 🙂

  5. Over the years we have (or I should say my wife has) replaced several kitchen and bathroom faucets in our homes, without the help of that tool. Next time, I think I’ll spend the ten bucks and buy her a basin wrench to make it easier.

  6. Gingerbrownie, I am NOT a very handy man, but i did this myself a few years ago. A surprisingly quick and easy process. And yes, you need that tool that helps you undo the existing faucet.

  7. Gingerbrownie…. Didn’t we all say it was really easy? (With the exception of maybe needing to by a wrench… though, buying a wrench isn’t very hard)

You give up way too easily, ma’am.

You should just try it yourself. The worst thing that can happen is that you can’t figure it out and you have to call your handyman.
