Water Heater Diagnostics
What signs are there that a water heater may be dying? I have one that’s 12 years old – it has a 12-yr guarantee. It’s begun to make an odd noise when the water fills. What goes wrong when a water heater dies so that you know it must be replaced?

if have a good one and don’t keep water temp really high could last quite awhile longer. Leakage is biggest sign.
Thanks, Vinca!
Twelve years is a pretty good run. I encourage you to call your plumber with this question before the unit fails and also before we’re deep into heating season. Some signs of a water heater about to fail: problems with pilot light, puddles or leaks, no hot water, gurgling, popping or boiling sounds caused by expanding or contracting parts, by the buildup of sediment, or by overheating. It’s in the basement of a single family. But, seriously, is that what to look out for? A leak?
Don’t worry yet. Your downstairs neighbor will let you know.
