Any recommendations on contractors for this small-ish job? This is our first reno, so we’re looking for someone reasonably priced, who is a good communicator and will do good work.
Sorry camp. I kinda did mine myself with my friend’s help on the DL (I know I know I can get in loads of trouble with the board). Licensed guys just want too much money, it’s ridiculous. It’s pretty simple cookie cutter thing to do. Just running a couple of bx cables from existing outlets is no big deal. The only way I would hire a licensed guy is if I needed to rewire the fuse box and needed all new wiring.
Try the forums. A couple of regulars recommended electricians but I can’t give personal recommendations for anyone.

I took on the demolition of kitchen myself. Very easy. Great stress reducer. Cost me 20 bucks to buy the destruction tools :-). took me about 3 hours to completely demolish it. Very easy and saves loads of money. There are small details you have to make sure to do and I would love to let you know what you have to make sure to do. Please feel free to email me. Oleg straightened out walls and did all my wiring and I got the kitchen guys to hang cabinets (which ended up a bit of a disaster) that Oleg somewhat fixed and then he came in and installed my fridge and stove and microwave. I would DEFINITELY stick with IKEA. Oleg does the cabinet installations and can help you measure and set up the kitchen (He has done it for someone I know).

wow…i was about to write almost the exact same post! I’d love to hear some recos as well.
Also has anyone ever done a kitchen reno where they actually took on parts of the job? i can see doing the demo or painting to save some bucks…what about, say, taking care of cabinets (if they were ikea or something) or buying the supplies? was there anything anyone really saved some money on?
