Question for Master Plumber How do you prevent the wet return line from clogging with sediment? I have a burnham steam boiler.

  1. I purchased a new Townhouse and it came with a new “Ambassodor BMS 10/20” boiler. The unit is distributed by Embassy Industries. I can’t find a tech near NYC who knows anything about the servicing of this system. It works well for 3 years and now it keeps shutting down soon after startup.
The flu pipe was realligned and it works well for a while. Now it keeps shutting down, about 15 secconds after the burner is lit. The ignition also keep sparking even after the burner is on.
Can anyone out there help with some suggestions.

  2. As Steam Man knows, you can’t prevent it.
You can delay it or deal with it after it happens, but inevitably, wet returns close up or leak. We install flush ports on all our wet return replacement piping, but most old systems have no such provision.
Keeping your boiler clean will certainly buy you some time.

  3. Try blowing down your boiler more often to remove the “guk” that collects down in the bottom of the sections. If the problem is already bad, as I suspect is the reason you’re writing (see boiler guyz iz shmart), you may have to flush the returns. Be prepared for a mess.
