styroam moldings

My house has had many of its original moldings removed as the rooms have been remodeled and reconfigured. I would very much like to restore the crown moldings but don’t think I have the money necessary to do it in plaster. Does anyone have any experience with the styrofoam moldings I have heard about? Are they more affordable than plaster (presumably)? And do they last for a decent amount of time? Any feedback appreciated.
Denton is very handy and I’m sure he did a fine job. But the mouldings with the corner pieces bother me–the look is not authentic. Wasder, I live in CH and if you want to see my fake mouldings email me at tinarina60 at gmail.
hopeless with tools?.. hire someone…you will have to stare at your record of ineptitude forever
All right Denton, now that you have thrown down the gauntlet I will check it out. Its not as if I am completely hopeless with tools and yet with something like this that needs to look really good to be worth doing could be risky. But will watch videos and see what I think.
Sorry, I knew they had some videos somewhere…

Looks like Balmer now has an American distributor…
C’mon wasder, you can do it! On the website I showed you, they used to have a coupla installation vids. It’s fairly simple, especially as they will sell you decorative corner pieces to make it easy to fit. THe only problems I had doing this were corners that weren’t 90deg angles, I needed some help with that.
Oh, and in terms of price, I’d say it’s about 25% of the cost of doing new plaster….
Agree with DIBS. And they are totally easy to install–anyone who can cut an accurate miter can handle it. Our carpenter put ours up.
In my experience, the nicer mouldings are more expensive per sq ft, but you save money on the install–it takes no time compared to doing even simple wood mouldings.
Thanks Denton and DIBS. Anyone have a recommendation for somebody to do the installation? A contractor or craftsman familiar with moldings?
