I filed my taxes for 2008 in February of 2009 via e-file, only to find out in July that I am being audited by NYC. They didn’t send a refund, just a request for more information. I sent them more information, and now they want even more (I filed an itemized return). I have been working with an accountant, but am beginning to think that maybe they’re part of the problem. I’m just not liking their lack of attention to detail, and I really don’t like the fact that I’m being taken through the ringer twice on this. My accountant is not inexpensive, and I have provided good documentation — from the beginning. Anyone have an accountant they like? Please let me know. I’ll probably see this situation through with the one I currently have, but when all is said and done, I think I will be taking my business elsewhere. Thanks in advance.
We use Coscia & Amsterdam for the past 3 years, normal Itemization/2 family home. My in-laws have use them for many more years for their personal and small business.

We do tax preparation and audit consulting in my office and I can tell you that the number of audits are up considerably.
In this economy the government is poor and looking for money anywhere that they can find it. That means if you itemized this year and not for the last several, then you may well be a candidate for an audit. Many times in an audit situation it is not -if- you will have to pay, but how much.
Don’t be so fast to blame the tax preparers – the IRS employees are far from perfect!

I have always been in good hands with Neil Byalick of Lee Schlussel and Co. He’s thorough and never a problem with my complicated situation, also have had friends who were quite pleased. They are based in Long Island, but he meets me in NY. 516 997 9005
Try Dennis Carbone in the Slope (9th ave b/t 6th and 7th). We use him for our business and personal taxes and has always been very helpful. Good Luck.
I’ve been very satisfied with Francis X. Morovich at Manhattan Tax and Financial Planning, 237 First Ave., New York, NY 10003-2919, 212-473-2717, http://www.mtaxx.com. he’s done my taxes for the last three years, my son’s for several years, and now a friend of mine as well. All self-employed, lots of extra forms. Have never used them for financial planning, so can’t vouch on that ground, but fine on taxes.
I don’t use them myself, but I’ll mention this place because I know what it’s like to be desperate for recommendations. I have a few friends that are with Better Tax Service in Manhattan. My sense is that they’re competent people and specialize in returns where the person is in the arts – but tend to be very crowded and brisk.
Good luck!
I use jewish accountant company at 65th st and Bay Pway. Their phone 1(718)256-9669. I had no problems with them so far.
PS: using Turbo Tax is like throwing money at the IRS.
