I’m moving at the end of the month and may end up homeless for a couple of days (i.e., move out Sept. 30th, don’t move in to new place til Oct. 2nd).

If I can avoid this nuisance I will, but if I can’t, I was planning to get a mover who could pick up my stuff on the 29th or 30th, store it for a few days, then show up on the 3rd to deliver it.

I’ll box 80-90% of the stuff myself and would like them to sort out the furniture and anything I didn’t get boxed up in time.

I’ve done an overnight storage before with Oz, so I’m planning to give them a call.

Does anyone who has done this in the past have advice?

I’m more interested in having everything go smoothly than in getting the cheapest price.

Oh, and any hotel suggestions for a 2-3 night stay with a small kid in park slope or downtown brooklyn?

  1. Just had a bad experience with FlatRate, from the booking to the move, so I’d personally discourage you from using them. If you do, make sure you get an onsite estimate before the move. Their M.O. is to quote you a ‘Flat Rate’ based on your inventory (which they collect casually) and then rack up the fee substantially if you have slightly more than you originally anticipated. We might have had bad luck, but our salesperson was incompetant and our mover was hostile – not a good combo.

  3. Yeah, was thinking about that Holiday Inn.

But $275 a night is steep for 4th ave.

Oh well, no one said moving was cheap or pleasant.

  4. Le Bleu has no availability for Oct 2nd!

Ah, too bad. Location is right, and I want to check out the “all glass bathrooms” and “organic toiletries”.

BTW, can NYC hotel taxes get any more obnoxious? Looks like the rate is 16% ($578 for the room + $92 tax).

    Thanks for the tips.

  5. Yeah nsr, companies will charge you a fee to keep the stuff on the truck. Better than taking it of and re-loading. Flat Rate did it for us.

There’s LeBleu which might work cuz they have parking.

  6. Gemini- my ex and I owned a small moving company for a number of years. Do you know a company called Graduate? (Not ours, but they gave us our start).

  7. NSR:
When I used to work for the moving company years ago, we would charge people (depending on the size of the truck used) a daily fee to keep their goods on a truck
so for a small-medium truck back in 1999 we were charging people $400 a day….
    It’s always worth the ask

  8. We did this with All Star moving — they came and packed us up and cleared out our apartment, and then delivered our stuff about a week later. I can’t remember how much it cost us, but it wasn’t exorbitant.

Call them and ask for Tom (the manager) or Rich (owner) they are both great guys and will be totally honest with you. All Star is also very reputable. Definitely not like some other shady movers I’ve tried to work with who never even showed up. My nightmare is movers taking my stuff to “store” and then never reappearing with it when they are supposed to!!
