We need to replace part of our main beam and sister some joints. The inspector said we need to find a team of engineer, architect, and contractor to draw up a plan, file it with the city, and then do the work. My question is: Who do I call, and does anyone have a recommendation for this kind of work? Is this what the storefront engineers do? We are hoping not to spend more than $3,000 to $5,000 for the whole thing.
Thanks everybody.
Does anyone know if the store front engineers I see in Bushwick and Bed Stuy specialize in this kind of work? Their signs say things like “permits, engineers, violations corrected.” It would be nice to find a firm that does this often and routinely, rather than one that does all kinds of fancier and more individual work such as remodeling.
I think Dave once mentioned an engineering firm like this in Bed Stuy that he had used. I don’t know for what. Dave, if you’re reading, any advice?
Thanks!
jim hill, judging by his postings, knows his stuff…but you budget sounds unrealistic to me (im a contractor)..id say closer to double that
Must this be filed? Just curious…
Jim Hill’s just made you a very good offer. In my experience, engineer’s drawings, fees, filing and sign-off will cost close to $3000. Many good contractors have working affiliations with architects, expeditors, etc., and vice versa. Generally speaking, a good route to go. Also, for more info, search past Forum for structural engineers.
I’m an architect and I work hand-in-hand with my contractor to provide a detailed estimate covering everything from design and filing through construction and sign-off. We can visit your residence and quickly provide you with this kind of estimate at a time that is convenient for you.
As for the budget, we’ll give you an honest estimate based upon the work required. Without seeing the conditions, it’s impossible to say more than that.
