Hello neighbors! A representative from US Energy Savings came around this evening asking to look at my utility bills (2 family home) and stating that they can offer fixed rates and lower to no sales taxes on my electric and natural gas bills. I’m wondering if this is a scam, the rates were lower than what I’m currently paying. Any advice? I’m seeing mixed information when googling for testimonials/reviews. Thanks for your advice, I know I’ll get the straight answers here!

  1. My mother fell for this and at the beginning her bill was lower but then it went up and when she tried to cancel they gave her the run around.. So just be careful, when something is too good to be true it usually is.. 🙂

  2. After reading about this here a while ago I had them knock on my door. I said “Wait, you really exist, let me get my camera I wanna post your photo”

    He ran like the wind.

  3. Run a search for this in the B’Stoner archives (can’t recall if it was a forum post or something on the main page). There was a post on this before about how some of these ESCOs sent folks around doing this very thing and they would copy down people’s account numbers from their bills and switch them to the ESCO without their permission (slamming).

  4. To be clear, I don’t know anything about this particular company. Just that there’s a notorious door-to-door scam in NYC where people switch your energy company without your permission.

  5. This is a notorious Brooklyn/Queens scam. They’ve probably switched you already without your permission–that’s why they wanted to see your bill, so they could copy down your account numbers and information.

Consumerist is the blog of Consumer Reports. If you search there for “energy” you’ll find a TON of stories about this happening in NYC.

  6. In my experience: lower costs, but extra fees that made the total bills higher rather than lower. I changed back to ConEdison/Natural Gas right away.
