Change a window into a door?

My latest question is about changing a window into a door and having steps built from that door down to the courtyard. I know this is a “brownstone” forum, but I live in a co-op. Has anyone had experience with something like this? Know anything about codes for it? Obviously I have to get board approval, but the previous owner did get approval for just that so I’m hopeful.
I guess the primary question is who is the right kind of tradesperson to contact about something like that? Would I need a GC? Or is cutting through a brick wall something I’d go straight to a mason for?
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. And, as per my usual, once I’ve gone ahead with something, I’ll report back my recommendations.
Thanks all!!
Erin
a general contractor who knows masonry. I had small windows removed and put in sliding glass door…required support above sgdoor. and of course interior finishing. General contractors will have iron workers they use.
S.U. Construction is who I used (they also built my new stoop which has iron stairs) 646-523-7155.
You’re allowed to post questions about coops as long as they are brownstone coops.
I did it. You’ll need a mason for the work, and an ironworker for the stairs. The mason can maybe bring his own guy. I hear there’s some guy around named Vinnie.
I assume the board will require DOB permission. THey were very particular about the stairs and deck re the spacing between bars and whatnot, drawings got kicked back to me for lack of detail. So you’ll need a architect to do the drawings and submissions.
And of course you’ll need a finish guy to fix up the sheetrock and stuff on the inside.
