Washer/Dryer Installation
We are buying a washer & gas dryer (stackable – any suggestions?). We’re nervous to install ourselves, & hooking up to the water & gas lines. I’m surprised Home Depot will not install – does anybody have recommendations for somebody who is reliable & will not charge us an arm & a leg?

to keep it short:
yes to PC richards and J&R in the slope, BIG NO to SEARS, they will not install gas.
Sears told me they will, but than when they got here they said no, They refunded my install and delivery money and I had to go out and pay someone else to do it, which was hard to find. When I had to replace the washer, PC richard came out and had to uninstall the gas dryer and reinstall it, a lot of extra work, but did not gripe. I heard other good stories and j&R
Speak to your plumber re: installation. In terms of where to buy, great prices, selection, delivery, from: http://www.shopeba.com/
PC Richards has consistently done right by me on a gas range/oven & a stackable washer/dryer combo [the whirlpool narrow model works great & I don’t see any advantage to the bosch model].
Don’t use Drimmers – bad service do not stand behind products. Better a bigger player who will replace something if you have a problem (Home Depot, Lowes, PC Richards) – I’m still getting appliances fixed a year later…..
Just recently bought a stacked washer/dryer from Home Depot but the dryer was electric not gas. I think they won’t install specifically because of the gas. From what I understand, there is a recent law in New York that requires gas to be hooked up by a licensed tradesman which is why Home Depot won’t install. So since it’s recent, most installers know HOW to do it, they just won’t officially say they will at the store. If that’s the case you might run into the same issue no matter where you go. I realize I’m not giving a solution, but just providing the info so you know exactly what to ask when you are asking if a company will install. You don’t want an installer getting to your door and then saying “oh i didn’t realize it was gas, can’t do it” and your screwed. Of course cash on site has a way of working that kind of stuff out but there’s no guarantee.
Sounds like you’ve got some good suggestions already but just to add a choice, bought washer and dryer from Sears and installation was $75 with some kind of promotino they were running. The installer was really nice too.
I second J & R- they gave me a better price than Lowes and installed it and the AC I bought from them. They can also recommend one for your space, usage, and price range.
In Park Slope: I research at other stores and online, then go to J & R Television at 108 7th Ave and order through them. They have always met or beat any price I’ve documented. They will arrange delivery, installation and haul away the old appliance. Over the years I’ve used them for a refrigerator, washer, dryer, dishwasher, stove, and flat screen LCD TV. I’ve never had a bad experience.
