Okay so I just moved down to Bay Ridge 2 weeks ago. Mid 70’s + 3rd Ave vicinity. Looking to hear from any of my new neighbors about which is the best deli, dry cleaner, tailor, take out, hardware store, etc etc in the area. Also, which restaurants are a must? There is so much stuff down here, I would love to weed out the crap. Thanks!

  1. I dunno about the Century 21 thing. Just my own cranky take on it. Everything you say is true, but I can’t stand it in there, I feel the essence of my soul being sucked out (same as in similar places wherever they are). I love Bay Ridge, but a spell in C21 is almost enough to ruin my day in the neighborhood : ) but a run to any of the mentioned restaurants places could save it!! : )

I have never had a less than great food experience in any Bay Ridge place I decided to try. Does a less than very good pizza even exist there? And the recommendations here for the favorite ones will send you to heaven.

  2. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Its kind of addictive – once you get used to it you may never want to leave. The only real downside is the long ride to Manhattan. We find the neighbors down-to-earth and really friendly.

For shopping – ditto most of the above suggestions. Double ditto on Family Store – there are a million choices for middle-eastern food – but their take on it is much more sophisticated and the people are super pleasant.

You were complaining about produce – if you have access to a car – check out the two mega-produce marts – Three Guys from Brooklyn on the corner of 65th St and Fort Hamilton Pkwy, and Circus Fruits on the corner of 60th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway. They are both 24 hrs and have excellent produce at a fraction of the prices you’ll pay close to home. For local produce – agree with previous poster – check out the two stores at 77th and 5th.

Also – coming very soon is a brand new Key Food on Bay Ridge Ave. (69th St) between Third and Ridge – a few steps down from Petite Oven. It hopefully will open in September.

  3. I live in the high 80’s so can’t help with local deli’s, dry cleaners, etc, but have eaten out a lot all over the neighborhood. The food here is really very good. Here is a short list of places you should check out. I tried to limit to 1 or two per cuisine, so there are plenty I’ve left off…

    Pub food – Kettle Black – 87th & 3rd
    Traditional American – 101 – 101st & 4th
    Steakhouse – Austins – 89th & 5th
    Brunch – St Germain – 83rd & 3rd; Cebu – 88th & 3rd
    Middle Eastern – Tanoreen – 77th & 3rd;
First Oasis – 92nd & 4th; Family Store – 68th & 3rd – for takeout. Go back often – always something different, everything is great.
    Greek – Elia – 86th & 3rd; Agnanti Meze – 78th & 5th
    Italian – Zio Toto – 84th & 3rd; Tuscany Grill – 87th & 3rd
    Thai – Bangkok Tokyo – 84th & 3rd; My Thai – 79th & 3rd.
    Sushi – Nouvelle – 87th & 3rd ; Dish – 92nd & 3rd.
    Chinese – Grand Sichuan House – 87th & 5th
    Vietnamese – Pho Hai – 86th and 4th
    Korean – Kimchee – 93rd & 4th
    Mexican – Los Politos – 73rd & 3rd
    French – Petit Oven – Bay Ridge Ave b/w 3rd & Ridge

There are pizzerias almost every other block, and every one I’ve been to has been really good. For other than your typical slice joint try Peppinos on 77th & 3rd which has great brick oven, Zio Toto for wood burning, Del Gorso’s on 71st & 3rd has a whole wheat pie if you’re into that.

  4. I go to 79&3 Associated Market for good produce. They also have good Taekwandoo school for kids.

If you are looking for cheap produce or good sea food – cross the highway into the Sunset park and look at any Chinese store.

There is also good fish store at 5th ave and 76th street.

  5. Check out the 2 produce stands on the corner of 77th and 5th Ave. They are way better than that one on 3rd you’re talking about. Also there is a fish monger next door to them, between 76th and 77th on 5th, that I like for fresh fish and shrimp.

  6. Wow, thank you everyone for some great info. Keep it coming!

What about good quality produce? The Food City by my place is shockingly poor, and the cheap veggie store across the street is dissapointing too.

  7. Correction: Alexandria is on Bay Ridge Ave (69th St) not 68th. Enjoy the new neighborhood. I moved to Bay Ridge 2 years ago and really love it.
