Ceiling Fans & Medallion

Throwing this one out to see if anyone has overcome this particular problem. We have a couple of ceiling fans to install. No issue there ordinarily, however upon closer inspection there’s nothing solid to attach them to. Issue we have is that we can’t get a brace up through the hole in the plaster medallion without causing some damage and even then we would need to go up through the lathe behind it. There’s no gas line there to attach to. Wondered if anyone else has has this issue and how it’s been solved. We’d like to keep the medallions if possible but understand they may need to be partially removed.
I had new boxes put up in my bedroom and living room last week. My electrician told me that there are new requirements for hanging fans so he installed new ceiling boxes because he cautioned that the fans could fall. Ask for Ganesh at Christopher John Electric 718-389-9898. He even vaccumed when he was finished.

FWIW I hung a fan from a regular, unreinforced box in my kitchen. I had the box installed before I thought of a fan and didn’t want to disturb the tin ceiling, that I had installed after the electric box, to put in a new box. I selected the lightest (and cheapest)fan I could find. It’s been up for about 20 years with no problem. This is NOT the best practice, so you might not want to do what I did, but it worked for me. My other ceiling fans are hung from gas pipes.
