I ordered a custom made sofa from Beckenstein Fabric and Interiors, 32 West 20th Street, NYC.
The sofa arrived with a horrible smell.
After much wrangling, Garry Greenberg, the owner, promised to have the cushions which were stuffed with rancid down, remade.
They returned the “new” cushions to me, and none of them were remade
Two cushions were restuffed and the other two hadn’t been touched.
They still smell. Beckenstein lied to me. The sofa cost a small fortune. And now i am stuck with a defective product, that my credit card company won’t allow a charge dispute because smell is an “intangible” defect.
I have filed a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs.
If anyone has other suggestions as to how i can correct this situation, I’d welcome them.
Beckenstein, supposedly reputable, obviously its not. I don’t recommend use their service.
I spoke to H and A upholsterers in Dumbo about all of this. They said that Beckenstein should have replaced the entire sofa.
I want everyone to get the word out.
Don’t shop there.
the most effective way to deal with fraudulent, deceptive and unfair businesses like beckenstein is to hit them where it hurts, in their pocket books.
what is the best way to get the word out about them?
Try the Better Business Bureau. They helped me dispute and collect on a claim a few years ago.
You could also file a complaint with the Dept of Consumer Affairs.
Also, if you go to Small Claims, take the pillows w/ you – if they smell that’s “real” & adjudicator would recognize the fact.
Small claims court. Beckenstein might refund your money just upon receiving notice of the suit being filed. That’s what I’d do. You aren’t rushing to sue, you did give them a chance to fix the problem.
