hi b’stoners, a friend of mine needs to locate a fireplace mantle for his his 1929 single-family house (stone or wood). I can get a list complied of various salvage places easily enough but was wondering if anyone had any first-hand experience with some of these places in the north-east (great inventory, especially knowledge people, good prices, etc.). They’d prefer to keep the hunt confined to NY/NJ/PA area if possible. thanks!

  1. thanks for the recs and info everybody! RH, very cool blog. I will peruse it for my own edification as well and also forward this thread to my friend.

  2. Architectural Artifacts on 125th St, NYC
(aka Irreplaceable Artifacts, aka Demolition Depot)

Olde Good Things in Chelsea, 124 West 24th Street
Relocating to Union Square as soon as we close out the renovation project there, 5 E 16 st. I’m the architect working with them on the reno and we’re basically just waiting on the awning guy and some DOB paperwork.

  3. I actually have an oak mantel that I was planning to sell. I don’t have a picture (no digital camera yet) but if your friend is interested in looking, we’re in the north Slope and he/she can contact me at housereno at earthlink dot net.

  4. I third Eddie’s.

Also, Vaccaro’s near Lowes, Silver Fox in Albany (they come down for the BK flea sometimes), ReStores (check locations), Junk to Jems in Dix Hills (or near there)….

If you go to my blog, you can search articles on any of these places or just punch in “salvage” and scroll through those articles.

I just remembered that I have a slate mantle leaning against my garage awaiting faux marble painting. It’s from a late 1800’s house.

  5. I second the Eddie’s Salvage recommendation–he’s a lovely guy and will keep an eye out for things if he doesn’t have what you need in stock.

Recently went out to Recycling the Past in Barnegat, NJ. Their website shows a lot of their inventory or you can call and ask. Very friendly staff. http://www.recyclingthepast.com

  6. I have had a lot of really good first-hand experience with Eddie’s Salvage at Grand Av and Greene Av. Very fair pricing. The inventory changes weekly.
