After months of wrangling with the bank, I am cleared to close on my refinance.

Here is my question: do I need a lawyer to come with me to closing? I have done all of this without a lawyer, but I am nervous about an August surprise.

Also, do I tip the title person?

Thanks!

  1. I recently refinanced with the same bank that held my original mortgage. Only my husband and I and a bank representative were at the final signing. It was all very straight forward, though perhaps things are more complicated if you are switching banks.

  2. I WOULD GET A LAWYER
my usual RE lawyer so pissed at me for not having him involved when I did a refi a few years back and he was right – the band charged me an outrages fee for title search and some other silly fees that if I used him I could have avoided!

  3. Word on past threads is that you don’t need an attorney to close a refinance and the title person gets in the neighborhood of $200. This is consistent with my refinancing experiences. The bank’s attorney should tell you what to pay the title person.
