I’m in the process of finishing the basement. I chose to leave the ceiling exposed and wish to paint it. I’ve already sanded it. What is the best primer and paint to use? I plan on spraying it on and also plan to paint the exposed pipes. I’m torn between using white or black. Has anyone painted their ceilings black like the do in some restaurants? The ceilings are 8′ tall from the bottom of the joists 8.5′ tall between them.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
We renovated our basement — formerly painted an off-white and chocolate brown combo — and used all white paint, ceilings and pipes included. I like the look. It is much cheerier than before and feels bigger. True we can see beams and imperfections but I decided that it was a bit silly to obsess over it looking like a basement, since that is what it is.
Thanks for all of your input brownstoners. Someone here at work suggested that i use some sort of textured white paint. She thinks that it will hide the inperfections. What do you think?

I second Benjamin Moore!
I like the idea of black, but feel that the ceiling height is not high enough and not enough natural light (in a basement) for black.
White is going to show every little crack, gap, crevice, every little thing. If your afraid its dark, you can always add lights. You can’t get rid of all the little imperfections. I would use black, and do not use Depot paint, use Benjamen Moore. Good luck.
Black will kill the light…
