Is 8th st between 5th ave and 8th ave in PS a landmarked section? And what would it cost to gut renovate a 13×40 ft building in today’s market? I know there are links about these topics, but I’m hoping to get the most up-to-date info. Thanks!

  1. According to the above, those blocks are not landmarked. That’s the easy part. The hard part is how to ballpark the reno costs. It all depends on how much detail is involved. At a bare minimum, you might get as little as $150 a foot, but that’s with little or no detail and very basic finishes. The costs go up from there, anywhere from $250 on up.

Read some of the archive posts. There have been some very detailed discussions of this within the last few months and the costs will not change enough in this time to make any difference. The best way to get a good estimate would be to contact an architect and a contractor when you have one that you are ready to make an offer on.

If you are very interested in one particular property and really think you’ll buy it, there are a few architects, myself included, who would be willing to see a house and give you a rough budget. I work with one contractor in particular, and in a situation like this we can provide an accurate estimate for the whole process.
