Hi Brownstoners,
I wonder whether you have any advice for me. Though I have only fictional children at this point, I am trying to research the public schools in the zones where I am looking to buy a place.
PS 157 Benjamin Franklin and JHS 117/ Francis Scott Key came up in my zone.
What is the best website to find school ratings in Brooklyn? Do any Clinton Hill residents have advice on public schools in the area?
Thanks!
Nothing beats actually visiting a school and seeing its students and teachers in action. Ask for examples of student work, ESPECIALLY from the later grades. You need to know how far the students in the school progress – what sorts of skills do they have? What work are they producing? Etc.
PS 11 looks like a great school, though the apartment we’re looking at is zoned for Benjamin Franklin. I wonder how tough it is to get into PS 11 if you’re not zoned for it.
If you don’t have kids yet, bear in mind that ratings of schools change – sometimes quite rapidly. When I moved to the Slope 321 was less desired – that changed radically in a few years.
Also FGKids yahoo group. PS 11 and PS 20 are the two which have received the most comment, good and bad. Many of us have gotten waivers for our kids elsewhere – downtown Manhattan, PS 261, etc.
have heard great reviews for PS11 on Waverly & Greene Ave. It’s been scoring pretty high on those Board of Ed annual scorecards. Besides the super easy parking, PS11 is the other reason I find it hard to move from the area
