I purchased a house that had an ADT security system installed by the previous owner.

I called the installer and was told that there was a changeover fee of $600+ dollars.

When I asked what this exactly entailed, I was told that the would replace the panel (which apparently was brand new) and have the system checked.

If the prior owner had a service contract (which they did) and were up to date on the bills (again, they were) why would it need a check-up?

I got a hard sell on the phone and started feeling like this was a scam.

Anyone else run into this?

  1. REMEMBER MOST THAT ADT HAS AN INSTALLER PROGRAM SO WHAT THEY DO IS BUY AN EXSISTING ALARM COMPANYS ACCOUNTS AND THEN TURN THE OWNER INTO A RESELLER AND THE BECOME PART OF THE ADT TEAM HAHA LOOK WHATS COMMING NEXT YOU CAN ALWAYS CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT COMPANY A LOT OF THEM GIVE FREE ESTIMATES AND IF THEY DONT YOU WILL FIND ONE THAT DOES SO TAKE YOUR TIME DOING THIS ITS SECURITY AND YOU WANT SOMEONE YOU CAN TRUST AND GROW WITH AND MOST OF THE TIME WHEN THE COMPANY TELLS YOU YOU NEED AN UPGRADE SUCH AS IF YOU CHANGE YOUR PHONE SERVICE AND IT WILL NOT WORK WITH YOUR CURRENT PANEL ALL YOU REALLY HAVE TO DO IS PUT A FILTER ON THE ALARM PANEL THIS WILL USUALLY WORK HAVE A NICE DAY HOPE THIS HELPED

  2. UPDATE:

I called ADT corporation directly (the first company I called was the reseller.)
They do not charge any fee whatsoever for new owners.

Curiously, they charge a little bit more per month than the reseller.

I also called AlarmsRus (thanks Denton,) and while they charge a modest fee for the changeover/reprogramming and some required modification of the equipment, their monthly was significantly lower than ADT.

What was nice about Bob was that he seemed to really know what he was doing and made several sensible suggestions. Most importantly there was no hard sell!

To save you all some time and hassle, AVOID having your ADT system installed or handled by Advanced Protection.

  3. I think you can have any other monitoring company monitor your alarm typically for around 50% off ADT prices. ADT is overpriced and unfriendly and I chose not to use them.

  4. I did not get charged a changeover or account opening fee.

In fact, if you wait a couple weeks, I’ll bet you will get all kinds of junkmail from ADT addressed to the New Homeowner offering deals on a new subscription. You might even get a $50 discount coupon.

The Brooklyn ADT number is 1 718 706 3200. Or go directly through their website to make sure you are dealing direct.

  5. Why don;t you try calling again, maybe get a different rep. Did you call the main # in Florida, or the local office in LIC?

My experience with them recently was terrible, btw.

Another thing you could do is get another monitoring servise and try and use the same equipment. Try Bob or Dennis at AlarmsRus, 718-236-1166, tell them I sent u.

  6. I bought a house 5 years ago that had an ADT system installed as well. After I closed on the house, I called ADT and told them I wanted to activate the system.

Never was I told about any “changeover fee.” I set up an account with ADT with a year contract and paid the necessary fees … but there was no changeover fee. It sounds fishy to me.

    Did you call ADT directly?
