We just installed sod in the backyard and it is growing beautifully with all the rain. However I have noticed that I am being bitten multiple times on the ankles when I stand on the grass more than 5 minutes. I don’t see mosquitos so my concern is that fleas are getting me as they do look like flea bites. Is this possible? Any suggestions on what to do to get rid of the problem? Also we have a Mulberry tree in our backyard that is dropping berries all over the place could this be attracting the bugs.
Thanks for your advice in advance,
Faye
Ghosts probably. Little ghosts with teeth.
feelyng, these could be “no-seeums”, thats the actual name you see on pesticide cans. i think it may cover a multitude of tiny biters you dont see. we have these in our backyard as well, and i get lots of little bites. indeed theyre these super-tiny barely visible light colored flying things (like mites, you can see them if you look closely). any outdoor deet-containing prod should work.
When I was working outdoors in upstate NY one summer I encountered these gnats (or whatever) someone called them no-see-ums. They were almost invisible little flys that leave little pin point sized bite marks that last like 6 months.

Dave, I think What usually bites higher up (or at least aims there). OP, could be fleas or maybe no-see-ums (i.e. biting midges, depending on where your sod came from). Call the nursery where you made the purchase, let them know your problem and ask if they’ve had similar complaints from others, and how to treat.
Although the environmentalists don’t like this sort of thing, a good dose of Yard Guard throughout the yard should be the easiest way. I never found any in NYC and had to bring it up from PA. There are also sprays that hook to the hose, also made by Ortho. Gotta find them online ot out in the country though.
OP here. Any idea on how to get rid of them?
I haven’t seen the What around here lately. 🙂
They’re green grass-mites. Introduced by rogue environmentalists into sod as a deterrent to excessive grass cover, which has a high carbon footprint and wastes water and fertilizer.
