For the past few days, the hot water in my bathroom sink has been coming out in a weak stream; last night, when I turned the fawcet knob open all the way, there was a horrible noise, like machine gun fire or something, and then the hot water came out on full blast. But then it wouldn’t shut off. Period. I was thinking I had air in the pipes and that was what caused the noise — but I don’t understand why the water won’t shut off (I had to turn off the main switch). Any ideas? I was thinking of just letting it run for a while, but don’t know if that will do anything or if I need a plumber. Thanks for any ideas…
thanks for the comments, I am not much of a plumber, so I appreciate the help!
Even so-called washerless faucets actually have a washer-type assembly. It sounds as if yours was deteriorating – hence the low flow – & then just burst. You can buy kits at HD or Lowe’s to fix that if you know what you’re doing – disassemble faucet & look at the parts. Or get a new faucet.
umm… sounds like your faucet is broken. No?
The shut off valve under the sink makes the water stop, right? (Is that what you meant by the “main switch”?)
A faucet isn’t that hard to install — usually compression fittings so you just need wrenches.
