Knocking in Pipes
I just started noticing an occasional knocking sound in my basement which seems to be coming from pipes. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks

I thought water hammer was a wave of hydraulic pressure that travels through pipes, usually set off by a sudden stop of the flow of water (stopping the moving column of water causes a wave to propagate backwards through the column?). Isn’t there a way to bleed the wave energy with proper venting of the system (a column of air acts to absorb the sudden spike in pressure)? I’m mostly making this up based on very rusty memory.
Thanks for noting that here, Brownstoner.
Lechacal, there are several types of water hammer and each has its own characteristics and causes.
You may be referring to water hammer caused by steam?

I thought water hammer was caused by an improperly vented system. Is that not right?
Water hammer gets my vote, but usually that’s caused by an unsecured pipe.
Then again, often it’s water hammer that unsecures the pipe in the first place.
Kind of a chicken-and-the-egg thing.

Water hammer?
Morse code a la Beauty and the Beast with Ron Perlman?
Is it in Morse Code?
Could be a pipe support or strap has come loose.
