Bringing stuff to a dump
I’ve got a bunch of plywood trimmings and a handful of old doors (in very bad shape), that I’d like to take to the dump myself. It doesn’t make sense that I have to pay someone to haul them. Since it’s from a home renovation project, I don’t think I can put them outside with…

I looked on nyc.gov to find out about bringing stuff to the dump myself, but can’t seem to find anything.
forget the schmear.. there are random stings organized by the dob to generate 1500- 5000 fines for illegal dumping…
If you give the sanitation guys a schmear you can put it all out at once. Just talk to them first to make sure you’re all on the same page.
Interesting. I’ll try it. I was hoping to take it to the dump myself instead of putting it out 6 pieces at a time, twice per week.
I’m surprised that the public dumps are closed. I currently do have a work permit pulled, but the debris is from work that I’m doing myself, (i.e. flooring and finishing), plus some stuff that was in the basement and backyard already.
Put it in front of your house and it will get picked up with the normal garbage pick up (or someone may come along and take it). Put out 5 or 6 contractor bags worth each garbage collection day and save yourself the expense and the trip.
Call 311 and ask them about the debris. They will route you to a DOS specialist who will tell you exactly what you can and can’t put out. I’ve put out a lot of construction stuff this way and I have not been ticketed following advice from calling 311.
The public dumps were closed a few years back. Most people will tell you that if you stand outside at the time of pick-up and help load your items, and/or discreetly throw in a few bucks, your stuff will be collected. You’ll find information re: bulk collection (including the two short excerpts below) on the DSNY site:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dsny/html/collection/bulk.shtml
Sanitation will collect up to six items from one address. Items must be placed curbside between 5pm (4pm on Fridays from October to April) and midnight the night before your regular garbage collection day.
Construction Debris – While the Department does remove non-commercial waste from homeowners engaged in small “do-it-yourself” projects, homeowners who are undertaking large projects should contract for their own dumpster by contacting a private rubbish removal service. Bulk and construction debris generated by hired contractors or fee-for-service personnel on home repair or renovation projects is considered commercial waste and it is therefore the responsibility of the contractor to arrange for appropriate private disposal.
I’ve put this stuff out myself and they will take it. I believe the maximum number of items at a time is six.
I think they can take the stuff so long as it is from your house (ie, you are not a contractor doing this for someone else). A guy from sanitation once told me, they take it as long as there is no permit in the window.
There is a maximum length that they will take – and it is on the sanitation website. cut those materials down to that number and put them out. Bundle or can as much stuff as you can (make sure the stuff is not too heavy).
I hope I’ve helped.
