cruising through the midwood section of flatbush I noticed that the streets in the East 30s have above ground powerlines; however, by 26th street I didn’t see any more poles and lines.Hmm, who makes these decisions about power lines?

  1. I suspect the decision was made LONG ago by Brooklyn Edison Co, the predecessor to Con Ed. My neighborhood, PLG, in northernmost Flatbush, was wired underground early in the last century, with connections accessed through odd manholes in the sidewalks, leading to “Flatbush Pots”. I sometimes hear Con Ed workers grumbling about them. The wires look VERY crowded. I wonder if, at some point in electrification’s southward progression through Flatbush [and Midwood WAS considered part of Flatbush, until fairly recently] the utility company simply decided that above-ground wiring was simpler or, more likely, cheaper.
