Peel Away 6
Anyone have experience using Peel away 6? I was looking for Peel Away 7 but only found 6 at Lowes. Bought a tub but realized it didn’t come with the paper everyone talks about. Used it for a fairly large armoire that has been painted over a bunch of times, and tried a test patch….

Used it for a fairly large armoire that has been painted over a bunch of times, and tried a test patch. Quite a goopy mess and looks like it may take several applications to get the numerous coats off.
Also, any suggestions of how to use for little crevices and corners? Works fairly well on a flat surface, but I have a mirror with a bunch of intricate edges and worried the paint and peel away will get trapped in the cracks.
I have been stripping various surfaces in my house and have used peel away as well as citrus strip and rock miracle–as well as the silent paint stripper and a good old fashioned hear gun. I ususally use a combo of all of the above–hit it first with the heat guns –then go the chemical route and finally steel wool denatured alcohol and sanding. I will be posting soon about the newel post on the southstuy blog but let’s just say-i recently purchased a drimmel and a sanding flap attachment and have been blown away about how fast those little specs of paint disappear. Wish i had discovered this tools utility 2 years ago!
Multi Strip, and the the better versions – ultra strip, & Tough 2 strip are far better than peel away. takes practice to let it sit long enough to gel and then scrape or dentil pick off. I’m stripping all the hall ways in my brownstone and have tried many strippers. peel away always has this gummy consistency that is crazy to get rid of. Pintchik is the only place around here that has the multi strip line.
Ive used both and I didn’t notice a difference. I left it on for a full day and they both worked really well on flat surfaces, not as good on crevices.
You can use plastic wrap instead of the paper to keep it moist longer.
Thanks for the comments. This strip was really meant to be a test strip to see if it made sense to do a more professional job getting this stripped. Which it looks like it will be well worth it! Nice wood underneath.
I got just a wee bit carried away annoyingly. I should have really just done a small square test strip like I had originally intended. Now it is a bit more of a mess.
I used a mineral spirits product to clean everything up and it looks like I am ok. Boy, peel away 6 is definitely a mess. Took me forever to clean everything up properly. Nearly broke my back and had a complete headache just from the small section I was stripping.
Peel away 6 is a “weaker” version from 7. Active stripping ingredient is a solvent-NMP. This type of stripper takes a long time to work (hours, sometime days) the smell of it lingers and permeates everything. It’s also not too effective on varnished surfaces; work better on paint.
You will need to “wash it off” using alcohol., or water with vinegar.
Multistrip works better than peelaway 7 (or 6, for that matter.) Rock Miracle works well but is extremely toxic. If you want to read a good entry about obsessive paint stripping technique, check this out: http://www.hawthornestreet.com/2007/11/paint-strip-woo.html
hint: get some dental picks. And be prepared to spend countless hours picking the paint out of dentils and fretwork.
