This morning a neighbor mentioned to me that a house(multi Family) on my block which is going through a gut renovation
may be turning into a homeless shelter. Now the owners have left because the place is going through renovation but at my wits end I am not really sure what to do or how can i prevent this from happening!! please send me an advice i am opened to any solution.

  1. To Denton, Mopar & Van Buren Proud I see what you are all saying what I have decided to do is contact the owner and ask him personally his plans for the building and then decided from there.

Thank you all for the great advice!!

  2. I have a halfway house that transitions convicts to civilian life on my block, and I have to say that it’s an enormous asset.

These guys are clean, quiet, courteous, keep an eye out on the street, and are there as a consistent presence at all hours of the day and night. When I come home late at night, I know for a fact that there is going to be a large man who knows me by sight and has been waving hello to me for awhile sitting at the desk in close proximity to the window, and I can factor that in to my little Safety Plan when I am walking home. This keeps me confident, and that confidence saves me quite a bit in nighttime cab fares.

These guys paint graffiti on the weekends, clean up the sidewalk of their property religiously, and are great neighbors, without exception. They are a big, positive part of making the block what it is.

I think it worked out that way because my block association president worked hard to convey a sense of the block’s character and goals to the organizers of this halfway house. I would take a lesson from this success story. I would stop thinking in terms of getting these people to leave, and start working with your block association to ensure that this new entity works with you guys to add value to your block.

It’s way easier, and it works well.

  3. If this building is on the small side, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. You’ll probably never see the people, and they’ll be on their best behavior.

  4. If it is being converted into a homeless shelter, it should need approval from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. I believe that this would also have to have a public hearing at the local community board.

Start by calling the local community board office.
