Hi,
So our permit for new landmark windows ALMOST came through in just 10 days!!! BUT we were just informed that we need to take off the window gates on the parlor level of our brownstone bc they are not original– Anyone know anyone selling period gates or reproductions or know how much this costs? Any help would be appreciated!

  1. Wait. You live in Clinton Hill on a Landmarked block and you really believe you need window bars on your parlour level???? I live in Bed Stuy, on a block that’s not landmarked and no one has parlour level bars.

Vinnie’s Italian Ironworks will also make them but edifice rex is right, the design needs to be approved first.

  2. If you can’t find what you need but can get diagrams from LPC, Ricardo’s Iron Work can fabricate replicas – 718 499 1153. I live on a block where almost everyone – including my neighbors either side – has parlor floor bars but I don’t & it hasn’t been a problem even though I was here when crime was more rampant.

  3. I can’t help with a source but be sure that LPC approves before you buy or have the gates fabricated. They may be rejected even if they are the same as your neighbors. They must be “appropriate” for your house. LPC has no jurisdiction over interiors except for individually landmarked buildings.

  4. There’s a company selling salvage iron in the Lowe’s parking lot on 9th St.
between 2nd & Smith. Search the archives—numerous ironworkers have been recommended on this site.

  5. I’m talking about the ugly 70s gates (we have the original ones on the ground level) and I agree that outside, and especially inside gates are ugly– but since both neighbors on either side have incredibly fortress-like gates and security, I was looking for a source for Landmark approved (old-looking) gates so we won’t be the least secured house on the block… I like the little arc like ones … Anyone know where to get them? or anyone selling their own…?

  6. AFAIK most parlor floor window bars were installed in the ’70s, or earlier, when there was far more crime. I resisted the impulse to install these, even when many of my neighbors did, mostly soon after the 1977 blackout. I’ve never regretted not having ugly bars on my parlor floor. Do you REALLY need these things?

FWIW, I don’t think LPC has any jurisdiction over inside gates, but those things are even uglier than outside bars and are unnecessary IMO.
