I was planning to have custom built-ins made for my parlor-level living room. Unfortunately, the price is a little out of my comfort level. One of the companies suggested starting with just one built in, since I’m planning on having 2 sitting areas anyway (a more formal area near the windows and a family room set-up in the middle w/ kitchen at the back). do you think this would look strange to have just one built-in bookcase on one side of the fire place?
OK, ten feet long on each side is twice as big as I was thinking. Hm. Maybe $12,000 to $20,000 is reasonable. Still, it doesn’t hurt to ask around. Maybe a single operator who has been building custom kitchen cabinets for years.
each piece would be about 10 feet long and about 9.5 feet high. haven’t seen anything close to $3,000, but I want some cabinetry on the bottom as well. and, yes, paint grade wood.
I would get another quote. I have a furniture guy who can truly make anything, honest a bit old school-no email, just a cell phone but does beautiful work. let me know if you want his name and number. he is from upstate new york but coming to do some work for me this week.
I was thinking of something very simple. Just boards nailed together. And painted.
I guess the price could depend a lot on what kind of wood you’re using. If it’s paint grade wood, I would venture to guess you could do both built-ins for between $3,000 and $10,000.
How long and tall is your space?
wow, mopar, this is one project i wouldn’t dream of as a DYI. i’m very impressed that you’re even considering it.
have only gotten a couple of quotes, but they average 10,000 for both built-ins.
Yes, I think it would look strange to have one built in on only one side.
Curious what quotes you are getting. I want to do this too.
Was thinking maybe this would be the one DIY project I could handle. I think 3rd Ward has woodworking classes.
It depends on what’s on the other side. I have a glass fronted antique bookcase on one side of my fireplace and on the other I have a low cabinet with a large painting above. It works well. Not everything has to be symetrical.
