I’m thinking about breaking through drywall in my apartment to expose brick wall and wonder if there is any danger of exposure to asbestos. The building is a federal brick, over a hundred year old type, in Park Slope. Does anyone know?

  1. I exposed a terra cotta wall but quickly framed, insulated, & drywalled it because that wall and my apartment got so cold during the winter. It looked great in the summer though.

  2. Asbestos was first used in plaster in the late 1940’s and its use increased until the late 1960’s at which point its use went to zero. Sounds like your ok. If you find horse hair in the plaster (which was a popular additive 100 years ago, added strength) then you will surely not have asbestos.
