I’m in the market for a 42” or 48” side by side built-in refrigerator. I’ve researched the following brands – Sub Zero, Viking, Monogram, Kitchen Aid, Thermador and GE Profle. After months of reading and chatting, I’ve narrowed it down to the Sub Zero and Viking. Is anyone aware of any issues with either of these brands? Also, are there any current owners out there within 50 miles of the Paramus, NJ/ NY area that can recommend the best place to buy as well as a professional installer?

  1. Anyone looked at the new Miele fridges? They look pretty nice, but perhaps are too new?

They seem to be around the same range price-wise as the vikings and sub-zeros.

  2. Another thumbs up for the Liebherr. We bought ours at Karl’s Appliance in Orange, NJ. http://www.karlsappliance.com. Like Krups, they sell all the brands you’re considering. But they are 10x the size of Krups with a ginormous showroom and an equally big parking lot. Besides good pricing, they also have especially good customer service. Ask for Dino.

  3. I have a liebherr too, which is working fine so far (1 year). I also bought it at Krups Kitchen and Bath, which had pretty good prices.

I’m puzzled as to why a fridge wouldn’t work and require servicing – I thought they were like televisions and only broke down after 20 years.

  4. I have installed many Sub Zero refrigerators and many Viking ranges. Both perform well but are not that reliable. I would say you have a 1 in 4 chance of needing service in the first year. Price them at Drimmers, PC Richards and MCKB http://www.mckb.com/ MCKB provides good service which you will probably need. I’m not sure about the others.

  5. I just bought a Liehberr-which I love. I have been going to Krups Kitchen and Batha in NYC on 18th for years. They always have the best prices. Go there in person, you may have to wait. Ask for Mitchel or Wayne. oh, they sell all the fridges you mentioned too.

  6. It sounds as though ApplianceNut has done his/her homework and has made a decision based on what he/she found regarding efficiency, reputation, durability. He/She is just looking for where the best place might be to buy one.

He/she is not looking for some politically correct analysis of his/her choice!!!!

ApplianceNut…I’m always of the mind that the local dealer is best as long as they have a good reputation for price and, more importantly, service. Most of the local guys are competing effectively on price or they would have gone out of business. So your query as to where to get one near Paramus is a good one. Unfortunately I can’t help you on that.

  7. I had the misfortune to inherit a SubZero. It was dreadful. I currently have side by side counter-depth Kenmore Elite as my basement appliance which is great. It is wider than 48″ tho. I also have a KitchenAid bottom freezer which I really like as well. I have no experience with Viking refrigerators, but their cooktops are pretty bad. Good ovens though.

  8. Sub-Zero is highly inefficient. I have a GE side-by-side that’s 26 years old & still going strong. Don’t know about Viking – in stoves, Wolf has a better rep.
