Just a theoretical question: What happens with rainwater, which gets into chimney? I have old disconnected chimney. On the first floor it is cemented out. But the top if the chimney is opened to elements. Does it mean, that this flue is full of water?

  1. Contact a professional chimney mason like Andre of A&A who advertises on this site. He’s a good guy and knows everything about chimneys.

  2. SenatorStreet. I do not think the sump pump can deliver 10m (1bar) of water pressure. I also wandered about the working chimneys. 3cm of rainfall produce ~2L of water. Where does this water goes?

As to my old post. Yes it is goofy. I did not mean to ask where to store the old gas. I thought to dump it into the 300Gl of oil so it will burn together. I know a guy, who dumped old gas into his diesel truck fuel tank and it work.

  3. If you put a cap on, it’ll eventually dry out – the caps let air circulate. In the meantime, you might want to drop a mosquito tab down there.

buy a pump like this one:

It should be big enough for your ‘tall’ problem. Then you can just put a vent cap on top.

Or you could just fill the entire old disconnected chimney with concrete. This way there is no way for it to happen again.

p.s. just an afterthought: maybe your could use the empty chimney to store all the hazardous chemicals that you had stored in your unused oil tank in the basement.

    Hope this helps!

  5. This is a very good question. I would like to know.

We have an air shaft in our rental that is open to the sky. Pigeons are living in there and pooping, which clogs up the drain, so when it rains frequently, there is a pool of water sitting down there for days, mosquitos breed, and also flies because of the poop. It is absolutely disgusting.

I am pretty sure that other houses I have lived in had skylight tops covering the air shaft.

  6. “mod squad”, yeh, it is so cruel. BTW, I also not sure, that this would work. Flue is 10m deep. Air pressure cannot push water higher than that even if I can suck the air to the complete vacum on top.
