Hello,
I’ve received wonderful advice in the past from this forum.

I would like to pull my building’s plans from the DOB, but I’m uncertain which DOB office to go to. Our building is in Cobble Hill. Building was gut renovated in 2005-2008 by a developer, and we need to get plans to an engineer to resolve some outstanding problems. (And I can’t afford to hire an expediter, as others have suggested.)

Any tips? Many thanks in advance.

  1. The borough DoB’s have become a lot more restrictive with plans after Sept. 11, and each borough’s access policies are a little different. From what I’ve seen in Brooklyn, it’s only building owners, architects, engineers, and expeditors that have access to a building’s records at the moment.

By the way — this is also at odds with the fact that the DoB is soon going to be placing most filed permit drawing sets up on the website (with some buildings restricted from view) that anyone can view online.

It’s kind of an interesting development really. Think your building down the street is adding one floor too many? YOu can go online and see the plans that are approved, and see if they are different from what’s built. Might make those trying to get away with something a little scared.

  2. Expect to spend some time waiting, but I think you should be able to have access. Plans are public records (hopefully an architect will confirm accessibility, but I believe this is so).

  3. I beleive there is only 1 DOB office in BKLYN – at 210 Joralemon Street – 8th floor
you would have to check in at the Info desk, tell the woman that you want to check your home’s plans and she will give you a numbered ticket. Am just not sure if you are legally allowed to pull the building’s plan as you aren’t the owner of the building. – you can try asking someone down there
I find DOB to be better in person than on the phone
    Good Luck
