  1. sixyears- a bad situation all around. But i admit to a certain embarrassment to think liberals formed the core of neoconservatism.

For my money the most important education gives kids the basics so that they can go on to better themselves. An agenda based education locks them into a niche- and the kids pay for it. But that said, for a long time NYC schools refused to take into account the changing school populations and kids suffered from that as well.

  2. “Cobblehiller, you got hired?”

If only mopar! No, sadly, Snappy and I were joking about opening a bar/lounge called…[I love this, nobody steal it!]….

    Heathens and Hooligans!

  3. ENY – check Etson’s note, that’s the one I was referring to. Your mother probably has some interesting stories about those days. There’s a good segment of the “Eyes on the Prize” documentary about it. The mostly African-American and Puerto Rican residents of Ocean Hill-Brownsville wanted local control of their schools and a less Eurocentric curriculum. IS 271 was the center of the controversy; several white teachers there were fired (depending on who you ask) when they questioned the decisions of the school board, or for being bad teachers unable to understand their students. It was one episode that caused some liberal whites to leave the civil rights movement; some of these ex-liberals became the core of modern-day neoconservatism.
