Is ripping out ugly plywood paneling from the 70’s and equally ugly linoleum tiles and ceiling tiles considered an “alteration” buy the DOB? Also, the last owner was a carpenter and did some minor little jobs. Can I remove this stuff too without a permit? None of it is load bearing or even solid and won’t change the original floorplans(only his creative carpentry projects).

  1. almost all old tile contains asbestos. i saw some guys sanding tile in a public housing building and stopped them.
nothing to keep it from blowing into every apartment, no respirators, not even a paper mask.
    can you say mesothelioma?

  3. I agree Alarm Guy. I personally have no problem removing ancient tile myself and have done so many times. Unfortunately the disposal becomes a problem. I’ve always hidden the tile in boxes or double bags and thrown it into dumpsters. I’m pretty sure Sanitation will balk at it when they see it at curb side.

  4. If you are a licensed contractor or real by the book type then modsquad is correct. However as a homeowner you have no way of knowing if your tiles contain asbestos so if you are comfortable removing them you can be equally comfortable tossing them in with your trash.
