Does anyone know how to remove an old appliance (like a fridge) that won’t pass through the doorway to the kitchen? We have a passageway into the kitchen which isn’t extremely wide. On the other side of it is an open space with a long countertop on one side and a raised countertop on the other side (with stools) that is adjacent to the dining area. Is it possible for the workers bringing a large appliance to lift it up and pass it through the large opening leading from the dining area to the kitchen?

  1. Thanks nyurb, Snark and mod squad for the feedback.

I agree that through the passthrough seems to be the easiest solution. With enough muscle power and countertop protection (and tip for the movers), I would think it should be fine.

mod squad, I think we are pretty close. I didn’t consider clipping off the coils. I’ll check that out; it might do the trick. Good suggestion!

Thanks again to all who commented.

  2. Besides removing the doors will clipping the heat-exchanging coil off of the back give you the extra space? How close are we, anyway?

  3. never mind, take the doors off and everything out of the fridge for when they delivery guys come. Give them $50 to lift it over the pass through and your done.

  4. nyurb, that would definitely be the easiest approach. Unfortunately, we measured and it won’t fit through the passageway even with the door removed.

  5. Thanks you two. G10, you’re right, we just need to know how they got it in! Although they remodeled that floor and may have had it there before completing the passageway.

Ok, I just got further details from the wife since this is really her project. Sorry for the fuzzy details before. I should have gotten it straight before I asked. Here is the scoop”:

New refrigerator is high end and not as deep (just wide) and WILL fit through the passageway.

Old refrigerator is deeper and will NOT fit through the passageway, even with door casings off. So it seems our options are:

    1) old fridge is sawed apart (not liking that option)
    2) old fridge goes out through kitchen window
    3) old fridge goes out via kitchen pass through.

  6. Will taking the doors off help? It usually isn’t a big ordeal to get the doors off, though for some reason there are some diabolical manufacturers who make doors that require weird star-shaped allen keys.
