i had a helluva time… I couldn’t find any studs but there was something hard under the 5/8″ sheetrock, and then it hit me… duh! In this part of the house we didn’t take out the old plaster, we just rocked over it.
So, we have 5/8″ rock, some thickness of lathe and plaster, and brick behind it. I need a fastener that will hold the pegrail and several coats in the winter. The pegrail uses a keyhole mounting system.
How would you anchor this, would you go thru everything and into the brick? What fasteners and how long?
IMBY, no I have my own wall, the house next door is a wooden frame.
The plaster is on lath with air space. See

Denton, Sheetrock+plaster+lath+brick wall. QUESTION: Is this the brick party wall between buildings? Is the old plaster over lath with a small air space before the brick or is the plaster directly on the brick without lath or air space? I ask because the Tapcon screws might damage the wall if it pulls the wall inwards until it meets the brick when you tighten them. You will need an anchor that provides strength downward as well as outward for a coat rack in order for success over time.
thanks guys…
or, since you are penetrating various materials, why not a big plastic molly with a very long (2″ or better) 12 or 14 screw. Be sure go go into the brick enough to take the screw. Should hold fine.
There are all sorts of other anchors for the brick, but I am not so sure the brick is all that important here.

I’d use a Tapcon. Its a screw made for masonry. Just make sure you penetrate the brick at least 1″ more is better. Also using the correct bit is crucial. If you buy a whole box it comes with a bit. They come in 1/4″ and 3/16″ diameters and hex head or flat head, one of which should fit the keyhole. It will be stronger if you skip the keyhole and have an exposed screw but either way should work.
