Has anyone had a dishwasher installed recently? If so, how much did it cost (labor, installation, etc.) and can it be done without tearing out the countertop? We’re thinking about renting an apartment without a dishwasher, and are wondering if it’s worth paying to install one.

  1. We bought all of our appliances from J&R in Park Slope and I would highly recommend them and Gordon – who they recommended for installation. If you call J&R they can put you in touch with Gordon. Our Bosche dw was installed after the counter top was installed. (I also recommend Bosche.)

  2. About 2 years ago, I ordered a Bosche dishwasher online from Sears. Delivery and installation cost $130.00. The 2 installers were on time and did a good job (and they took the old one away).

  3. Dishwashers are typically 24″ wide and mounted undercounter. Not sure what it would cost to install.

There are also countertop and portable types. If you have the floor space, the portable type might work out ok for you. You just connect it to your sink when you want to wash, I think. There are ads in Craigs List pretty frequently for people who used one for a year or two in a rental and now want to sell.

  4. They all fit under the counter. I assume you’d have to remove a 30″ cabinet to fit one in though. All of this, including the plumbing and electric can be done by a handyman as long as your landlord isn’t requriing you to get a separate licensed plumber and a separate licensed electrician on top of the installer. With a good handyman it shouldn’t be more than a couple hundred dollars depending upon what prep work is involved (cabinet removal). Sorry I can’t recommend one though for a job like that.

  5. The potential landlord doesn’t have a problem with our having a dishwasher installed (we would pay to have someone else install it); he just doesn’t want to pay for it himself.

  6. Did your landlord approve of the installation?

I’d run it by your landlord, odds are they have a preferred contractor/handyman for such jobs. Most landlords do not enjoy tenants installing items, especially appliances, without their permission, especially when the person doing the install is not approved by the landlord.

My advice, run it by your landlord. If you’re doing it without your landlord’s knowledge on purpose do not be surprised if they freak out about it.
