Has anyone else tried to have curtains in their bay windows? I’m not sure how to install the hardware. On an upper floor, I had 2 narrow curtain panels per window, with one short rod on each section of the bay. The problem is, there is a lot of fabric and it’s hard to pull it back entirely. On the main parlor floor, I’d like the ability to close the curtains completely and the ability to open them as much as possible. I think what I need is a rod supported by a bracket in the center window of the bay. Has anyone come across something like that, used it or something different, know where to get it?

Thanks

  1. I believe it’s possible to have a curtain rod custom made to fit a bay window. It’s not really a complicated job, just requires a metal worker or welder to make two bends in the rod. Then you’d want to use one panel of fabric on the left and right windows, and two for the middle window that could be drawn to either side. Only problem is I don’t have anyone to recommend for fabricating the curtain rod. Any interior designers out there with sources?

  2. I toyed w/ how to do that for years & finally saw a quite elegant solution at a neighbor’s house. You put up normal hardware – anchor it on each side & in the middle. Then you install those round things – I’m not a decorator so I don’t know the terms but they’re round pieces of wood on sort of stems that are what attaches to the walls. You drape swags over the round/stem things to hide all the ugly curtain hardware.

  3. We have a bay in Philadelphia which has a bench seat built in across its width. We have sheers hanging from those old style white rectangular rods in each of the three bay sections…so two very short lengths (~1 foot each) and then two panels across the front of the bay (~4 feet). These provide light as well as privacy when the center panels are closed. Then we have a pair of drapes hanging on a rod across the front of the bench with tie backs on each side. These are only used to completely block out the sun if someone’s using the sleeper sofa.
