1) Can anyone recommend a reliable serviceperson who can repair/clean older window air conditioners? G&D on Henry Street closed down a while ago.

2) I need to purchase two small window air conditioners and they need to run very quietly as they will be very close to beds. Any brand recommendations would be most welcome.

Thanks!

  1. Keep in mind that the newer AC’s are much more energy efficient. Between the repair costs and higher energy bills for your older ACs, you might spend less by getting new ones.

We bought two Frigidaires last year that came highly rated on Consumer Reports – they work great but are really noisy, which is ok for us as they drown the summer “street noise” that’s more apt to wake us up.

  2. I’ve pretty much given up on “quiet” window a/cs since Panasonic stopped making them (they were truly quiet.) I might look for a used one. A GE I bought last year is OK if more than 5-7 ft away. Sharp is good, but is hardly “library quiet.” Freidrich is supposedly very quiet, but double the price and very heavy (which is probably why they’re quieter).

The shop on 7th & Union repairs anything- J&R TV and A/C.
