2-1/4"Backset entry mortise lock
Anyone know of a company, other thank the Accurate Lock Company, which makes entry mortise locks with 2-1/4″ backsets? I’m helping a friend with a narrow stile entry door and the standard 2-1/2″ size pushes the door plate to overhang the edge of the stile. The $500 the ALC wants for theirs is rather steep….

I’m helping a friend with a narrow stile entry door and the standard 2-1/2″ size pushes the door plate to overhang the edge of the stile.
The $500 the ALC wants for theirs is rather steep. If they are the only company I guess my friend is going to have to bite the bullet.
I ordered all my doorknobs here (this page is just an example) and was very happy with the quality. They offer some products with 2 1/4″ backset:

Just remembered- E.R. Butler on Prince Street(not Spring) sells FSB. The salespersons name was Sage. I don’t pay for the hardware, so I have no idea how much it costs but I defiantly got the impression that it wasn’t cheap. There are other places that sell FSB.
Common size actually, just not in this country. You will find many if you search 57mm. Here is a little English lesson for you, because you will find that most of these locks are in England. I used to have an Englishman working for me, and I got accustomed to him using these terms.(It drove me nuts)
centres= backset (edge of door to center of spindle)
mortice= mortise (this spelling indicates UK, NZ, or Australia)
rebated= rabitted (you don’t want this)
external= exterior (as in doors, entry doors)
sashlock
FSB is a German company, therefore they use the standard 57mm (2 1/4″ backset) I forget who sells it in Manhattan, somewhere on Spring Street.

I ordered a mortice lock with occupancy indicator for a bathroom door last week from UK and it was less expensive than most domestic hardware.

Give their tech guy a call. He’s always pretty helpful and they may have something that’s not abvious on the website.
Those are interior mortise locks not entry ones. Entry mortise locks have a heavy duty deadbolt with an opening to accept a lock cylinder.
http://www.houseofantiquehardware.com has a number of smaller ones, reasonably priced too. Go into Door Hardware and Door Set Parts.
