Painted pipes
The paint on my heating pipes in my recently renovated parlor floor is peeling off in huge clumps. I’m not sure what to do. Should I spraypaint them like people do with radiators? I’ve also heard about heat resistant paint – is that an option – and is that particulary toxic. Any thoughts would be…

High heat spray primers and spray paints are available at hardware and big box stores. Krylon may be one of the manufactures. Available in a bright white which dresses these pipes up a bit. I used a similiar product on some pipes 8 yrs ago and it is holding up fine. The existing paint will have to be stripped off.
Call me if you have any questions.

some idiot put latex on the pipes…strip it down to the metal after the season, and put heat resistant primer and paint on them..or wrap them in sisal rope, which is another option..
I think I remember reading somewhere that you cannot use latex on pipes. Could that be the issue?
When the heat is off scrape all the paint off.
Get heat specific paint (I forget the name, but any hardware/paint store, Home Depot etc will know). At my place they are silver. Doesn’t look so bad. Doesn’t peel which looks even better 😉
Lots of stuff on the archives and lots of disagreement, too. My experience has been that the closer the pipes are to the heat source, the more likely the paint is to peel. My advice is to wait until heat season is over, strip the pipes, then use a heat resistant spray paint. Your color options are pretty limited, but if you use white, you might be able to paint over it with the non-heat resistant paint of your choice, using the spray as a primer. We just left ours white and they did not peel this year.
