I’m looking at the NYC Dept of Finance website and it looks like I am exempt from filing a RPIE because (1) my assessment for 2008 is less than $40,000 and (2) the property is rented to a blood relative. The next sentence says that you can file an RPIE exception. Do I need to do this?
Even when it’s questionable whether an RPIE is required, I’ve found it wiser in the long view to file one (it establishes a record of your situation in the city system). Odd as this may seem, I recommend you visit the Finance Center in downtown Brooklyn where someone can answer your questions and walk you through the filing using an on-site terminal.
