Can anyone inform me of what would cause the combined light/ceiling fan switch to buzz when I turn on the light? Do you think this is something I need to be concerned about?

  1. BFAG, it’s not the wattage; fans are about 100w, the same as a bright light bulb. It’s that most dimmers are not designed for ‘inductive loads’ which are principally motors. You can get special dimmers for motor loads.

However, doubtful it’s a fire hazard either.

  2. This is a Quorum wall mount remote control 3 fan speeds, reverse light dimmer uses 2 wire, temperture sensor. I purchased 3 of them several years ago for $70 a piece to work with 1 Quorum and 2 Casablanca fans. It wasn’t until recently that I noticed the sound from one of them. Considering that I paid $70 a piece and the others aren’t generating a sound do you think that just that one went bad over time? Can you suggest another model that would work with a Casablanca?

  3. I’m with Senator Street on this one. The cheaper dimmers can’t handle the wattage of the fan and present a fire hazard. Stop using the fan until you replace that switch.

  4. Is the switch a dimmer, and is it controlling the speed of the fan?

I special type of dimmer would be needed for this application. A standard dimmer may hum/buzz, and worse, burn out the fan motor.

Also some inexpensive dimmers will hum/buzz even when used as designed (usually louder when the light is dimmer).
