We have a large apple tree (about 3 stories) in our backyard. It’s beautiful but it produces thousands of small (lady apple-size) apples in Midsummer. Some days I’ll pick several hundred in a shot. I’d love to get professional help to pick them from the tree before they fall to the ground. They damage the flowers and whack a head from time to time. Is there a company any knows of that would do this? Thanks for your ideas.

  1. Wow, that is a huge tree! Aside from contacting an arborist, you could call the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. They have an info line and may have some ideas. I guess the tree is pretty high/dangerous to climb, but for the lower goodies I would also look for some neighborhood kids or hippies. There may be someone who would love to make applesauce, and could be fun way to meet some neighbors.

  2. I used to live on an old apple orchard on LI and we used to let our neighbors who were interested in eating the apples to pick them throughout the summer. Also, you can get an apple picker… which is basically just a wire basket with some hooks around the edge on the end of a long wooden pole and then pull the apples down as they become ripe.

  3. Professional? What you need is a teenager. I picked apples one fall for a big commercial orchard, and it ain’t no profession. All you need is a bag and a ladder.
