My husband and I are in the process of purchasing a CO-OP in Park Slope and we disparately need some recommendations or reviews for wood floor refinishing/fixes. Before we move in, we would like to get some basic work done (painting, new baseboards, etc.), but the floors are super important. The floors are in good condition, just worn where the finish is either gone in spots or barely there in most. We have some close friends who are working with contractors, but we want to get some more ideas …
Here are a few we’ve looked at:
1. TaylorMade Contractors
2. Stanley Co.
3. Janos P. Spitzer Flooring
They seem to be top names, but are there local contractors that are a.) comparable or better in quality?, b.) great price for service?, c.) just overall fantastic?, d.) reliable?
Our place is about 1,000 sq ft of wood. If you have some experience with this and feel ok with giving us a general idea of cost and amount of time for this work, that would be wondeful.
Thanks.
See posts on “Old Oak Flooring”. Sean only does floors. His prices are fair and his craftsmanship is excellent. My house had old floors with sections of plaster patches (covered by carpet). He re-used/salvaged wood from rooms where I had to replace the entire floor – and used these pieces in other rooms that only need a patch job. He did this to ensure the flooring was a near match. The finished job looks great and you cannot tell where the patch is.

I don’t know about the others, but Janos Spitzer is truly one one of the recognised experts of wood flooring. Peiser and Sons is also in that bracket. I once saw a quarter sliced Sepele mock-up in his showroom while there with a client. It was beautiful.
Prices typically range from $1000 to $2000 for 1,000 sf.
Giovanna, I would love more information. Your floors look gorgeous. Send me a note here daxxy1[at]gmail[dot]com – I am interested in price and how long it took. Sounds like they did a lot of work. thanks!
I posted a photo and recommendation for a carpenter on the forum approx. 2 weeks ago. You can see the floor, moldings, and casing of the work done. If your interested I can provide you with further information.
NYBK01 – thanks. I kinda figured I would get bombarded with that one…Have you used them?
A.K. – Thank you. I have heard the same – seems Verazzanno has either done a great job or subpar in most of the forums I’ve read. Thanks for the recommendation!

I hired Verazzano to do my mom’s ground floor of her brownstone several years back. The team worked in a hurry and did a subpar job. They ended up only doing one coat of Poly which eventually wore down to the wood again after only 2 years. I’m guessing since they saw my elderly mother as the client they decided to just do a rush job. I regret hiring them.
For my own brownstone in 06 I used Carlos from Inti Interior Design and Wood Floors. He was very detailed, cost effective, and gave me recommendations for stain colors. Overall an honest and nice person. I’m using him again for I just purchased a property in Bergen County, NJ and he’ll be doing my floors, railing, and steps. Carlos can be reached via his cell number at 646-281-2659, tell him Adam recommended him.
Good Luck,
A.K.
